What is culture? What is my culture?
Culture: the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively.
Here is how I see American culture: American culture is so vastly different depending on where you go. I have collections of stories my mom has told me from living in California for most of her life and then moving to Huntsville when she married my dad. To this day she hasn't fully adjusted to the very involved social lifestyle of the multiple generations here. The interactions and attitude people have towards others is so vastly different. Here in the south everyone is almost invasively concerned with the intimate details of your life. Do not be offended, its because they were raised to be very very connected with one another, which in California is considered really offensive and quite scary according to my mom.
On culture shock: Though I've never experienced full-on culture shock I do remember a time when I felt suffocated by a language barrier last year. Our assignment for Spanish class took us to a Spanish bakery in town and suddenly being placed in an environment where I wasn't able to fluently communicate with others was quite petrifying. I love experiencing other cultures but am also held back by a fear of insulting or being indelicate when handling someone else's lifestyle. It was a fantastic experience though my heart was racing the entire time. I do believe the assignment had the desired effect on me.
Notes* Chase: Disposable and consumer culture. Education expectations.
